HDFC Bank Chairman Resigns: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has said there were no material concerns on record as regards the HDFC Bank's conduct or governance.

This came hours after resignation of HDFC Bank Chairman Atanu Chakraborty citing ethical concerns.

"HDFC Bank is a Domestic Systemically Important Bank (D-SIB) with sound financials, professionally run board and competent management team. Basis our periodical assessment, there are no material concerns on record as regards its conduct or governance," RBI said in a statement.

The statement emphasised that the bank remains well-capitalised and its financial position remains satisfactory with sufficient liquidity.

On Wednesday night (March 18), Atanu Chakraborty had resigned as chairman of HDFC Bank. Atanu Chakraborty cited ethical concerns as the reason behind hid decision.

HDFC Bank is the country's second-biggest lender, after the State Bank of India (SBI). It is the biggest private sector financial services company in the country.

This is the first time that a part-time chairman of HDFC Bank has left mid-way, raising concerns over its functioning.

Meanwhile, the RBI has granted its approval for the appointment of Keki Mistry as an interim part-time chairman with effect from March 19, 2026, for a period of three months.

Who Is Atanu Chakraborty?

Atanu Chakraborty was appointed part-time chairman effective May 5, 2021 almost a year after retirement as Economic Affairs Secretary.

His term was extended for another three years in 2024 till May 4, 2027. Chakraborty, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Gujarat cadre, retired as Secretary of Department of Economic Affairs in April 2020.
